Like many formal therapeutic relationships, a session lasts about an hour. However, I give space for the Spirit's moving by leaving space before and after appointments.
Most people find once a month to be a good rhythm for their lives, but there are no hard and fast rules. Some individuals meet quarterly. Those in an active discernment process may meet bi-weekly. The pace is determined by the directee's individual need and season of spiritual growth.
I have a studio in the corner of my home outside Asheville. I'm also open to meeting in a mutually-agreeable quiet spot or meeting virutally via secure video platform.
I never want finances to be a barrier to approaching spiritual direction, so I do not charge a fixed rate. I'm glad to discuss options over the phone or face-to-face.
If you decide to give spiritual direction a try, we schedule a time to meet for an hour. I'll send a short survey prior to our appointment with a few basic questions around your spiritual history, current spiritual practices and goals. You can return the survey ahead of time or just bring your thoughts to the first session.
We'll begin the first (and every) session with a nourishing prayer practice: light a candle; recite a short liturgy; read a poem; or just sit in silence. Once we've invited the Spirit to join us, I let you lead the session with whatever is on your heart and we listen to God together.
Though some spiritual directors utilize a contract to establish expectations for the relationship, I prefer to come to verbal agreement in the first session. I believe a relationship treated with mutual courtesy and respect creates the best opportunity for success. If we agree to pursue direction longer term we will discuss the expectations of an ongoing relationship as well as scheduling details like frequency and compensation.
